Workout

The past week's training was mostly in my home gym in the garage. I did an average of 1 hour every day, a combination of stationary bike and the new elliptical I got from Costco. The machine say I burned 800 calories! The cardio exercise helps strengthen my stamina. I was soaking wet and felt great after the workout. I shall post some pictures of my home-made gym later.

Beginner's Clinic

December 6th, 2009. I attended the beginner's clinic conducted by Juile Brown and a couple friendly ride leaders. We met at the parking lot of sport basement near Presidio. It was a chilly day. Luckily no rain as forecasted.

Julie ran through a lot of the basic about bike, its components and safety instruction. I thought I know how to ride a bike. I don't really, a true newbie. We learned about the hand signal, practice riding in a group in the parking lot and a short loop around Presidio. The view of the coast with golden gate bridge in the background is spectacular. I am kicking myself for not bringing a camera.

Now, we go on a 6 miles practice ride on the street. It started with flat landscape and then need to climb a hill. The hill does not look that steep. Boy was I wrong. I was almost exhausted after reaching the top. My 10 year old mountain bike is really not suited for this. I realize that I need a much lighter road bike for my next ride. Biking down hill with car beside you was also a new experience to me.

It was a very good experience and I learned quite a bit. I never know there is so much abou bike that I don't know. I thought you jus hop on and ride. I so look forward to the next practice ride that go across the golden gate bridge.

How it get started!

A Haas classmate, Wendy McCall, asked if people would join her for the AIDSLifeCycle 9 event. It is a fund raising event for supportting the SF AIDS Foundation. The foundation focus on AIDS prevention and assist people with AIDS in the Bay Area. The event raised more than 10 million last year and the funding are cricital for the foundation to carry out their noble mission, especially in his budget cutting climate.

I want to be one of those 3000 cyclists and help people in dire need. I want the challenge. The 7 days, 545 miles journey still seem to daunting to me. I am not sure I have the physical strength to complete it. After attending a couple meetings with ALC, inspired by a gentlement in his sixty and doing this event for the 3rd time, litsening to touching stories, I made up my mind and get out of my comfort zone and take the plunge!

Here I am. Raised $300 so far and started training for about a week now. Let the journey begin!
